Edward slipped out of the bed silently and padded over to his clothing, picking up the pieces from where they had been dumped on the floor. From the bed, Mustang watched him.

“We should stop,” his lover whispered quietly into the darkness of the room.

“I know,” Mustang whispered back.

“I’ll never be her,” Ed told him as he slipped into his clothes.

“I know,” Mustang whispered again.

And in the darkness of the room, golden eyes locked with onyx, and in a single moment they had the conversation they always had, what are we doing?

Even if they desired to change it, they knew, beyond anything else, they couldn’t stop this sin, they were already too far gone.

Wouldn’t Hawkeye be proud of how far I’ve fallen? Mustang thought as the back of his young lover faced him.

“I’m sorry,” he whispered into the darkness, “I’m sorry Mustang, I’ve gone and done what you told me not to. I think I’ve fallen in love with you.”

“I know,” Mustang’s voice was hoarse.

Golden eyes pierced him, desperation inside them. “Tell me not to.”

Mustang’s head lowered, and Edward let out a choked groan, but he didn’t speak.

The older man stood from the bed and stepped forward, enfolding the younger man into his arms. “I’m sorry,” he whispered into the golden hair.

Hands clamped on his biceps, and a head buried itself into his chest.

“It won’t fade.”

“I know.” A hand stroked Edward’s back. “I know,” he whispered again.

“You still love her,” grief filled Ed’s voice.

Arms tightened. “I always will.” He pressed lips to the young man’s head. “But, I hope you know that I love you as well.”

A released sigh. And this time, it was Edward who murmured, “I know,” into the night.
